Oscar Material
Fascinating, endearing, stunning. Beautiful opening title sequence, exceptional cinematography and locations.

Roy's patience and gentleness helped Alexandria's big heart blossom before us on screen, there inturn healing and propagating the subsequent opening of Roy's own wounded heart. Each of them became each other's hero.

Despite their age difference the convergence and divergence in the vision of their story exemplifies how in our own minds communication and collaboration between people can be interpreted both so similarly and dissimilarly and yet still be woven together.

The commentaries on how the film was shot, constructed and its evolution were fascinating showing genuine innovation: Lee Pace and Catinca's first meeting essentially shot "live" and Lee's separate "live" performance to cast and crew regarding his ailment are examples of how this story within a story further blurs the boundary of what is real, or natural, with that of a story. Brilliant.

The musical score: Haunting and addictive.

Definitely Oscar material.

While completely original and unique, subtle nuances in "The Fall" evoke elements in two other great films: "The Wizard of Oz" and "Once Upon a Time in the West".

"The Fall", I am certain, will be studied by film students in years to come alongside those made by Fellini, Sergio Leone and other Greats.

Sidenote: The recurring presence of oranges in the film signifies their importance in that era of Los Angeles especially in hospitals: Much of the orange crop in that era was purchased by the government for the wellness and benefit of patients, causing orange shortages and high orange prices for the rest of America.

"In All There Were Five..., And A Mystic"
I never imagined that someone would ever be able to translate the powerful imagery and disjointed, yet coherent storyline of vivid dreaming onto film. Well, maybe the '08 cinematic release `The Fall' didn't quite accomplish all that but it came pretty close. The visuals are spectacular containing images that resonate with archetypal energy and the music is nothing short of elegant. The influence and evolution of director Tarsem Singh's hallucinogenic style is immediately evident and we can only hope that he has still more projects of this magnitude awaiting on the near horizon.

While `The Fall' is first and foremost a visual, almost visceral experience, there is enough of a storyline here to provide the necessary impetus to instill life in its characters and propel them forward towards their destined goal. The utterly disarming Catinca Utaru and Lee Pace do a superior job at infusing the human element into the plot as well as supplying the audience with an all important intermittent narrative that clarifies some of the more obtuse activities taking place in the fantasy sequences.

Be sure to bring your thinking cap when you sit down to watch this one. You'll be lost without it.
