"Jump And I'll Catch You" ~ And They Lived ...?
After watching the '07 attempt at romantic comedy `Then She Found Me' I can only assume the moral of the story is that `happily ever after' is no longer the goal in a relationship. It has now been replaced by the more realistic and they lived `somewhat content for the time being'. Yes, in my estimation the film is indeed that cynical and pessimistic. This assumption on my part is further supported by the Jewish joke told at the beginning and end of the movie. It's about a trusting child being told by his Father to jump off a high step only to be allowed to fall instead of being caught by his Dad as promised. What's the lesson? I guess it's something like even the ones you love the most will let you down, or worse, don't trust anyone.
Needless to say I didn't enjoy this film despite the presence of the usually charming Colin Firth and the always vulnerable, girl-next-door Helen Hunt. On the positive side there are some unexpectedly unique twists and turns in both storyline and dialogue but it's not enough to save this overall dismal film. Oh yeah, I liked Bette Midler in this one, thought I'd never say that about her in anything.

A few laughs, a few tears and a lot of heart...
This movie is about half sad and half happy. It's definitely more of a chick flick, but I think single fathers might appreciate this, too. I rented it on a whim because I love Colin Firth, and I loved him in this movie...a very realistic portrayal of a single father on the edge of breaking, caring for two children all on his own. Helen Hunt did a wonderful job in her role as the main character, April (and as director). She really knows how to deliver her lines and pace her reactions. I am not at the baby fever stage yet of my life, but she drew me into her character's baby drama. I felt for her and cried when she cried. This was a very touching story. The ending was so sweet and not what I predicted at all.
Random note - Helen Hunt wasn't believeable as being 39 to me. I couldn't get over her droopy eyes and cheeks.

I LOVED IT
I don't know what movie others saw but I thought this was a very good movie. To those critical of Helen Hunt's wrinkles etc., I say GOOD for Ms. Hunt! - We can get pulled, and botoxed faces from any number of phony hollywood stars, both women and men. If you are looking for the typical hollywood love story forget it, if you are looking for a challenging life situation that makes you think or *GASP* think, view this movie. If you are looking for Hollywood slick/contrived this is not for you. 2008-11-03

Fantastic movie
This is a really good movie. It's real - unlike a lot of the Hollywood stuff that's fed us. Helen Hunt is believable and gives a very touching performace. Bette Midler is - well - Bette Midler. She's always good. This is a bit of a chick flick that I enjoyed watching. My wife and I enjoyed it throughly. 2008-10-31

Horrible. Hated it.
I didn't like this movie at all. It had a cast of actors that I normally enjoy but the way they were cast and the dialogue they were given made me dislike their on-screen characters. Hunt herself looks practically elderly and she is supposed to be an attractive 39 year old. Broderick is as whiny and creepy as everything I've seen him in lately. Colin Firth was erratic and outright ugly most of the time as if they told him to just act as angry and frazzled as possible. The actors only flesh out their roles briefly here and there and are cardboard cutouts most of the time - especially Helen in the lead role. Only Bett Midler's character had any actual life and energy in her. She brought some fresh air, even some heart, to her scenes but it wasn't enough to cast off the gray that hung over this film. If you want to see what it looks like to have life dump on shallow people then watch this film. If you want to see a strong character push through the challenges of life and rise above their circumstances you may be, like me, disappointed. I do think this is one of those love it or hate it films and for me it was the latter. 2008-10-31
