A classic that needs no filler!
"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" is one of the best moments of my childhood. If for no other reason than the line Linus delivers with such conviction, "There's nothing but sincerity here as far as the eye can see!" That could be the underlying theme of all Peanuts classics. "You're not elected, Charlie Brown", the companion short, is enjoyable and amusing, though not nearly as solid as 'Pumpkin'; but again, it's hard not to like any Peanuts offering. 'Pumpkin' takes us all back to childhood innocence and the belief - no matter how confused - in something better. 2007-11-02

Not Great for the Littlest Kids
I own this movie, and always liked it growing up. But parents of really young kids might want to know that the kids call each other "stupid" and "blockhead" a lot and talk about beating each other up, "slugging" each other, etc. Plus, Snoopy flies a fighter plane and shoots at other planes and then gets shot down with bullet holes in his dog house. Like I said, it's a great movie. It just might be surprising for some of today's parents who are used to more PC children's shows. Another Halloween option for the littlest kids is Spookley the Square Pumpkin - it's also available at Amazon. 2007-10-29

Halloween with Charlie Brown and the gang
Why is it that the programs that you grew up watching never grow old? Possibly, it is because they were made so well. The timeless 1966 Peanuts classic, IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN, definitely falls into that category. Charlie Brown and his friends celebrate the Halloween holiday.
Linus believes in the so-called Great Pumpkin who is the Halloween version of the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus. While the other children partake in trick or treating, Linus and Sally spend the evening in a pumpkin patch waiting for the great one. It is quite laughable to see the end result of their wait.
Although, the cartoon is only 25 minutes long, there are plenty of content and laughs to go around within that short time span. Indeed, the scene where Snoopy plays a World War I flying ace are extremely funny as well as the scenes where the children create their Halloween costumes. For those familiar with the Peanuts cartoons, Lucy tends to be the boisterous one, and in this episode, she is no different; it is ironic when she tells the other children to choose a costume that is the opposite of their personality -- she chooses a mask that resembles a witch. In addition, Charlie Brown tends to get the short end of the stick; while the other children get goodies in their bag, all he ever gets are a bag full of rocks!
And as an added bonus to the DVD, there is an additional cartoon, YOU'RE NOT ELECTED, CHARLIE BROWN, which shows the rudiments of how the election process works as seen through the eyes of Charlie, Linus, Lucy, and Sally. The kids coax Charlie Brown and Linus to enter the race as student body president. Always the faithful dog, Snoopy contributes to the campaign as well in his most unusual way.
IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN is indeed a quintessential classic for those who grew up watching the program. It is unfortunate they are not included in this DVD, but as a child, I can remember watching the commercials for Dolly Madison cakes. Nevertheless, when the holidays roll along, it would not be complete without the Peanuts gang.
