Deadwood 3
This third year left me wanting more, as previously. The main characters, and even some of the secondaries, continue to unveil new aspects of their personalities. The language is deliciously atrocious but the violence definitely escalates due to the role played by Gerald McRaney.
It does seem as though the writers planned on continuing another season, as the finale does not wrap up many of the characters's story lines. With all said and done, however, i look forward to re-watching it to catch some of the missed nuances that i'm sure i'll find.

Phenomenal!
Deadwood is one of the best series ever written! We are so disappointed it doesn't appear the series will have an ending, but are thrilled we have this collection. Not only is it great to have every episode to watch and review - since you often have to listen to the wonderfully written dialogue more than once! - but the additional interviews and narrations over the episodes included on this DVD bring even more indepth consideration for the characters and this time of early settlement in our Country. Truly a one-of-kind program. 2008-02-22

Unsatisfying
I'm not sure what to do here, as I'll acknowledge Deadwood Three had great moments. Twenty minutes on the hour were five stars and beyond, but there were guns put on the wall that didn't go off (The Earps), suspense not delivered (The Hearst showdown and the Chinese band waiting), implausible plot twists (the killing of the prostitute), a climax that never happened, and monotony in between the drama. The monotony was the most devastating and painful to the drama, as there too often were long boring scenes. The theater bunch had no place, it's as if within Deadwood there were long advertisements for Masterpiece Theater.
Yes, it's true that the Langrishe theater crew really existed, and perhaps that's why the writers felt they had to include them, and maybe that's why the Hearst thing ended the way it did, because they wanted to be historically accurate, but when history is not good story telling than why bother? They could have just filmed miners digging gold all day if they wanted to be accurate and bore the audience.
This was frustrating film making, even more frustrating to watch, and after the drama of the first two seasons, I'm not sure what the writers were thinking. I know once fans are hooked, they can see no wrong, but any five star rating here is pure bunk. This season would have died and there never would have been a Season Two if this were Season One.

Good but cancellation is no surprise
I've enjoyed Deadwood but I'm not surprised it was canceled. Despite any other excuses or explanations shows are canceled for one reason... people aren't watching it. A show like the Sopranos might get away with season after season where nothing happens, however Deadwood is a western. The genre does require a certain amount of action and moral unambiguity. The characters are so compromised by the end of the third season that one is left with the inability to care if any survive. Even Bullock becomes party to the murder of a [...].
So, I'm not surprised it was canceled. Fans of westerns simply don't tolerate this much evil in it's heroes. And frankly, despite the current love of nihilism in Hollywood, most people back then were honest, as they are today. The town is way too over-populated with anti-heroes.
Not enough of what enough viewers want to keep it on the air.

Deadwood - 3rd Season
The video collection I ordered was shipped on time and was exactly as described. Very pleased with the prompt service and would definitely order from Astro Video again. 2008-02-08
