Sergeant York
I very good movie to watch even now it is a classic. Today people probally have'nt heard of the real person. It would be interesting if they remade this movie again. 2008-03-09

Great Family Film
This is one of my top ten favorite films. Almost a Christian film, although a Hollywood production, because of Alvin C. York's testimony and influence in the film. The story is mostly a fictionalized plot, except for the actual battle scenes where York captured all those Germans. The real York insisted that those be done just the way it happened with no embellishment (except for the "turkey call").
Gary Cooper gave one of his classic low-key, everyman performances as York. Great cast of supporting players, from the great Walter Brennan down to new-comer Joan Leslie. (Watch "This is the Army," which was made a couple years later and see some of the same contract actors from Warner Bros. Studio.)
I watch this one over and over and show it to friends and relatives. (My family and I even went camping in middle Tennessee and visited York's grave site and the beautiful little mountain valley he came from. His home is a state monument.)
A great film, with a great cast and a great director, producer, and music director about a great American. Shows what old pre-war Hollywood could do when they did something right.

Sargent York
I bought this movie for my husband for a christmas present. I have enjoyed it so much that I bought my mom and dad one. They really enjoy this move also. I was also impressed that I received it as quickly as I did. 2008-02-13

Far beyond the duty: religion and war are not opposite
The first aspect to remark is the accurate construction of the dramatis personae: In the first half of the film we watch in body and soul the lives and times of Alvin York, of a farmer who, from time to time liked to be the main troublemaker of the town, until the love of his life appeared before him. Then a sudden change will operate on him, becoming a fervent religious man, but gifted of an enviable aim, which eventually will be his talisman in the war. The first half of the second part deals with its entrance to the trenchs of the war, knowing about the world extends itself far beyond his beloved land, and the conclussion is about his courage in the bloody combat. I mean, a simetric geometry.
Based on a true story, that recreates a remote valley in Tennessee, but as many American people, is faithful human being dedicated to earn his life, working and working to get some acres of land.
But the wartime will lead him by other landscapes where he will learn to distinguish between to kill a man is by far, less important than save the life of many others.
Alvin York embodies once more the essence of the hero, of humble and unknown origin who makes what he thinks it's right, without second intentions, and its only ideal once the war is to return his birthplace despite he is acclaimed as national hero, until he notices the good actions work out as a kind boomerang.
"Sergeant York" was one inspirational film, that permeated profoundly the epic spirit in those hard times in which the bloody WW2 was just beginning.
And Howard Hawks' s enormous talent as storyteller is carved in relief with this meticulous style, provided of touching characters around York.
Emblematic film that deserved to Gary Cooper an Academy award as Best actor in 1941.

Greatest film ever made
This is by far the greatest Gary Cooper movie and for that matter the greatest movie ever made. The Special Edition DVD is also the greatest of all dvd's on Gary Cooper ever done. This movie is the number 1 dvd selling movie on Amazon for Gary Cooper films, Number one for best selling for Howard Hawks and number 2 for best selling war movies of all time even outselling movies like Flags of our Fathers and Patton. It was at number 2 for best selling Gary Cooper movies ever since it was released but in the last two weeks it has been outselling even High Noon. This will not last for long though as Amazon has raised the price on it from 19.99 to 24.99 giving customers only a 1.99 savings. I guess the powers that be could not stand seeing this movie at the top of all the best seller listings on amazon and decided to boost the price to almost the list price. This is beyond a 5 star movie and certainly a 5 star dvd presentation of the movie. WB deserves a 5 star ranking for giving this movie a 2 disc SE treatment that it deserves. 2007-11-29
