Dissapointed
I thought this was going to be a lot better than it was. I never saw it on tv or heard anything about it. I thought it would be as good as "Rudolph",or "Santa Claus is coming to town", but sadly it is not. I dont think little kids would enjoy very much of it. I probably will not watch this again. i wish I had just rented it instead. Then I would only be out the rental fee.
PS Its not Boris Karloff's fault this animation didnt work!

My Childhood Revisited
I had been hoping to find this issued on DVD for a long time. I guess it's my getting older that makes me more reflective on things I remember from my happy childhood. They never seem to show these classics anymore, unless they are on a cable channel that I don't subscribe to. This show is smartly done, not overly child-ish either, in fact it's rather more adult than kiddy style. The plot is a familiar one of who can outwit who; the greed of man or monster as the case may be.The songs are fun, very 60's music, costumes and hairstyles. It's odd that as soon as I started watching the movie, I remembered the lyrics! Scary! Evil is undone and love truimphs in the end! Who could ask for more? 2007-01-04

Fun for a collector...
But that's about it. Thought my kids might like something fun for Halloween. Had read a bit about this but didn't remember seeing it. Now I know why - long and boring. 2007-01-03

GREAT CHILDHOOD CLASSIC! A MUST FOR MONSTER LOVERS !
This is a classic favorite from my childhood. If you like Rankin and Bass and Universal Monsters this is a dream come true. Excellent movie for the kids and young at heart and one of Rankin and Bass's best features. Boris Karloff lends his special voice to the production. The animation style is really cool and they monsters have never looked so cute! Filled with catchy songs and the kind of magic we expect from the team of Rankin & Bass. A must have for any monster kid! 2006-11-02

Great For Boos and Ghouls Of All Ages
When I was a kid, I had this obsession with monsters. I don't know what it was but I really thought that they were great. I remember reading whatever I could get my hands on about Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and Lon Chaney. I even remember one year at Halloween my costume was a combination of Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula, and the Wolfman. I called myself Wolfrankula and I think I got the prize for "most creative".
Ahh, shucks...
And even though I loved the original horror movies of the 30s and the 40s, this movie, made in the 60s, just pushed me over the edge. This movie combined three of my favorite things; monsters, puppets, and groovy music. Everything just seemed to "gel" for this movie. Like one reviewer had mentioned, this movie played every year on the Los Angeles station KTTV, channel 11 every year around October. I am sure that now that it's getting close to Halloween, some station will inevitably play it.
Afterall, it is a classic.
*******SPOILER ALERT************SPOILER ALERT******SPOILER ALERT*******
I think the part of the movie that really creeped me out as a kid is when I learned that Francesca was a creation of Uncle Boris and then I learned that Uncle Boris' nephew, Felix, was also one of his creations. It still sort've gives me the creepy-weepies.
So, if you are around 40-45 years of age and want to "go back" to some great childhood memories, get this or get it for your kids and watch it with them, it's still a lot of fun.
Peace and Blessings...
