Jesus Christ Superstar
Jesus Christ Superstar (Special Edition)
It is fortunate that this theatrical film from the 1970s is available on DVD since a few years. I can only say that this rock opera, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and texted by Tim Rice (a winning combination) is the best I have seen in decades, apart from musicals like Westside Story or Porgy & Bess. Adding to the winning combination, the film is also a masterpiece by its director Norman Jewison, and as well as a great accomplishment by its actors. When the film was released in North America, it raised a lot of protest by various churches, but I actually think it was timely, it was a compliment to the young generation of America with its dreams and liberal convinctions, and it was a wonderful portrait of a time which we Christians and Jews later called A.D.

I don't know how to love him
Jesus Christ: Superstar

I remember when this first came out. It was very controversial, some thought it heresy, some a way to get the message to a new generation. I belonged to the latter. I really enjoyed the songs and the message.

Highly recommended for Christians and fans of rock opera.

it's all about
the music. Stage or movie, the music makes this a keeper. Last year I watched my 16 yr old daughter run sound at a college theater camp for highschoolers, the 1st act was "What's the Buzz" from JCS. I almost started crying. This movie always makes my top five. Ted Neely's voice alone makes the movie worthwhile, despite the competition from Carl Andersen. I leave all the religious psycho-babble to others.

Review from a woman's heart
I have to disagree with the "wimpy" comment for the Amazon review. Ted Neeley is not "wimpy" in the role of Jesus. To borrow a line from the movie the reviewer does not "understand what power is".

We were able to see Mr. Neeley perform JCS live recently and he's still amazing at 64, even better than the movie performance. He has a rare gift and I hope his light continues to shine on stage for many years to come.
