Very scary because it could have happened
When I watched this 20 years ago I found it scary then and it still made my heart beat faster watching today. The scary part was when it was evident to most people that war was going to happen and people panicking. I had tears come to my eyes when the farmer had to force his wife to quit making the bed and get to the shelter. When she had to face what was happening the cry of despair from her is heartbreaking. To know that your life and your love ones life is essentially over in such a abominable way...

Goggle September 26, 1986 and find out how close we came to nuclear war. I just came into Colorado that day for a new life here. So close to the end of the world it's chilling!

We have different world today but we are not safe from this horrific ending. It would be another scenario but the same tragic results.

Disterbing and real a great disaster film
I enjoy disaster films and this one I herd about and had to watch it and I enjoyed it. Ok it was made in the 80's so it's not the greatest acting and the special effects are not the greatest but get over it. Also the film is made for tv so it's disterbing but not too disterbing. The film is about what if the cold war really happend and the nuc where droped in the us. It falls the vents and shows us what would happend if it really did and how to rebuild civilization. The acting is ok the story is edge of your seat( if you canr get past the first hour which was pretty bad).

DISTURBING ,FRIGHTENING BUT A MUST SEE
Few movies envoke more emotion than "The Day After". A film created as a warning to the nations of the world that NO ONE and i mean NO ONE wins a nuclear war. This movie shows the decay of civilization set on by the catastrophic events of a nuclear strike. The acting is so genuine and superb that you cant help have a tear in your eye. The actors show the loss of not only what was but what will be and no hope. The sense of the loss of hope. These people realize and go aimlessly along knowing each moment is hopeless, dieing a slow agonizing death with no hope. Everyone speaks of the scene that scred them or disturbed them the most. There were many. But for me the most disturbing thing is the end credits where it states what we saw was actually less severe than what an actually strike would be.If thats less severe my god i dont want to imagine the actual. It truly would be the end of the world ,end of life as we know it. Its hard not to have a lump in your throat and sick feeling in your gut after seeing this film. But it must be seen to warn everyone that this must never happen. That anyone thinks there can be a future or winner is an idiot. Try to put yourself in the place of these characters and ask yourself what would i do? Its scary

Very poor.
I got this because I read an online article that spun this as a cool movie about how society falls apart after a nuclear attack. I was looking for sort of a Red Dawn vibe - how people survive a catastrophe. I couldn't even get through the first hour of the movie. Totaly saucy 80's TV movie. Totally.
