The Triplets of Belleville

An animated feature. Lots of weird, far out fun. Some brief, relatively harmless, nudity at beginning. For those with a ridiculous sense of humor.

This is not a film about plot, character development, meaning or analysis. Instead this film is an experience - it creates an alternate world that is a pleasure simply to observe. The film is filled with subtle details and insights, from the way a woman toys with her necklace, to the way a dog rests his head on a table in an attempt to get his owner to refill his food dish. The physical shapes of the characters are often novel such as the 2-headed mafiosos with box like shoulders or the baloon-like townspeople. Each of the characters has a unique gait and a variety of expressive mannerisms. Example - the foppish waiter who bows so low while serving food that his head is completeley upside down, and then leans way back like a ragdoll while he walks. Even the physics are at times startling, seeming to operate by the logic of dreams. There is one scene where a car is going up a steep incline and as the ascent becomes more severe the car slowly begins to lean backward until it ends up pitching end over end back down the hill. A wonder of animation and imagination - highly recommended.

I love this film. Animation is beautiful and beats the socks off any type of typical 'cartoon'.

this movie is most definitely one of a kind. i love how bizarre and unique this animation is. it has so much of a story line, and so much creativity with very few words. great film.

This zany classic shows how the loyalty and determination of a widow, her son, and their dog, triumph over the evil forces of international gambling cartels and kidnappers with the help of the titular triplets. Well worth a watch if you like color, music, mayhem, and catch-as-catch-can cuisine.
